When you think about wedding gifts, what comes to your mind? Most of the couples would probably say cash wedding gifts… Why? Cause that way you can choose whatever you want to do with it. The obvious problem that your wedding guests might have with giving you envelopes as their wedding gifts is that it’s quite impersonal and also some people are not comfortable with you knowing exactly how much money they are spending on your wedding gifts. Most people prefer to give something that will actually remind you of them while for others it’s actually much more convenient and easier to just prepare an envelope instead of looking for a perfect wedding gift.

In order to avoid receiving all kinds of housewares that you actually don’t need, like gravy boats, salad bowls, citrus presses, microwaves, etc.- the option of cash wedding gifts might just be the best idea for you. And of course the way in which you ask your guests to bring cash as their wedding gifts doesn’t need to be uncomfortable.

Your approach should be very honest and you should bring the message across in a way that stresses what the wedding gifts will mean to you. One way of doing this is to set up a so-called wedding fund and explain exactly what you will use the money for, like going on a beautiful honeymoon, decorating a baby room or I don’t know, getting a pet miniature pig. The point is that people like to know how their money will be spent so that they can relate and feel part of whatever special it is that you decide to do with it.

If you don’t feel comfortable with this option than you can always register for actual wedding gifts, like silverware, wine glasses etc. and cash them out afterwards.

Lately what’s becoming more and more popular is to build your own wedding website from one of the free templates online, which you can then use to bring all your wedding related messages across. If you are a bit more old school you could also just spread the word of mouth and inform your wedding guests in person, by phone or email.

Either way, some of your wedding guests might still be stubborn and bring you a coffee maker or fondue set, but when people know how you will spend their money, they are most likely to bring you the envelope with a nice personal wish card.

Note: Its recommended to have a special wedding gifts box for envelopes, positioned at a central spot for people to slip in their envelopes. This way you can avoid the awkward moment of people handing you their envelopes directly. Or better, delegate one of your groomsmen to gather all the envelopes. It might be a safer idea, rather than just leaving a loaded box unattended 🙂
